The decision regarding where to have your breast augmentation surgery incision placed is one that you and your experienced cosmetic surgeon will make together. Here are the four types of breast augmentation incisions generally used:
- Inframammary – This common type of incision is made underneath the breast, where the crease naturally conceals the scar.
- Transaxillary – Another popular choice, this type of incision is made within the armpit, meaning there is no scarring of the breast. This option cannot be used with silicone implants.
- Periareolar – This type of incision is also widely used. It is made around the nipple, along the lower edge of the areola. The tiny scar is easily concealed in this highly pigmented area of skin. If you are having a breast lift along with your breast augmentation, this is often a preferred choice.
- Transumbilical Augmentation (TUBA) – This new type of incision is made in the navel (implants are placed using an endoscope). The scar from this incision is quite small, and of course, leaves the breasts scar-free. Only saline breast implants can be used for this type of incision.
