Will I Have Scarring After My Liposuction Procedure?

Dr. Paul Angelchik is a Phoenix plastic surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is also a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Dr. Angelchik is well-trained and experienced in all forms of plastic surgery, namely breast enhancement and facial rejuvenation. He has been serving patients for over 20 years. Dr. Angelchik brings his surgical experience, expertise, and quality care to patients in and around Phoenix, Arizona.

When patients are considering any type of plastic surgery procedure, one of their main concerns tends to be scarring. Although liposuction is much less invasive than other cosmetic surgery procedures, it still requires an incision, meaning a scar is unavoidable. However, this does not mean scarring has to be noticeable. Drawing from many years of experience, Dr. Angelchik works to reduce visible scarring in his patients by strategically choosing incision points and using the careful skill necessary to minimize trauma to your skin.

One of the benefits of liposuction is that it requires very small (3–5 millimeter) incisions that produce tiny scars. Every patient’s body heals differently, but in general, most scars from liposuction should fade and virtually disappear over time. Besides regular scarring, the skin at your incision site can potentially undergo a change in pigmentation called dyschromia.

If inflammation occurs, you may notice a dark spot on your skin. This hyper-pigmented mark typically disappears in under six months, although it can last longer in patients with naturally dark skin. In a similar vein, the friction caused by the cannula tool at your incision site can sometimes kill off pigment cells in the tissue immediately surrounding your incision, resulting in a light (hypo-pigmented) spot on your skin. All of these skin marks can be addressed and minimized to the point where they are not an aesthetic problem.

The vast majority of patients who undergo liposuction at Dr. Angelchik’s office enjoy the benefits of their procedure without worrying about or even noticing any of the scarring that might result.
